Oscar-nominated actress and fledging director Angela Bassett, who co-starred with Houston in 1995’s “Waiting to Exhale,” will direct the biopic.

“I have such regard for both Whitney’s and Bobby’s amazing talents and accomplishments; and I feel a responsibility in the telling of their story,” Bassett says in a statement. “Their humanity and bond fascinates us all. I’m beyond excited to have this opportunity to go behind the camera and into their world.”

The Newark native, who died in 2012 at the age 48 after drowning in a bathtub with cocaine in her system, was married to Brown, then known as one of R&B’s bad boys, from 1992 to 2007.
