The state yesterday awarded $3,781,270 in aid to 30
Hispanic community organizations to address
economic, educational and social needs among New
Jersey's Hispanic residents.
"This assistance will help create a comfortable and
supportive environment for a broad spectrum of
needs," Gov. Jon Corzine said in a statement.
The aid will help the organizations with programs
ranging from youth computer literacy to work-
readiness development for adults, according to acting
Community Af fairs Commissioner Chuck Richman.
An additional $1.5 million in the current state budget
enabled each organization to receive $35,000 more
than they received last year.
La Casa de Don Pedro of Newark received the most
aid, $308,704. The Puerto Rican Action Board of New
Brunswick obtained $253,464; FOCUS, the Hispanic
Community Development of Newark, received
$248,172, and Aspira Inc. of New Jersey, a statewide
organization, received $245,750.
BOAZ Community Corp. of New Brunswick obtained
$78,000; Community United for the Rehabilitation of
the Addicted, Newark, $75,000; El Club Del Barrio,
Newark, $95,000; El Primer Paso, Morris County,
$45,000; Hispanic Direc tor's Association of New
Jersey, statewide, $200,000; Mercer County Hispanic
Association, Trenton, $111,796; Morris County
Organization for Hispanic Affairs, Morris County,
$120,769; PROCEED, Elizabeth, $120,988; Puerto
Rican Association for Human Development, Perth
Amboy, $186,484, and The Latino Institute, Newark,
$60,000.
