Rutgers University History Professor Annette Gordon-
Reed has been awarded the 2009 Pulitzer Prize in
history for her landmark work, The Hemingses of
Monticello: An American Family (W. W. Norton 2008).
The award was announced April 20 by the Pulitzer
board. In its citation, the board praised The
Hemingses of Monticello as “a painstaking
exploration of a sprawling multi-generation slave
family that casts provocative new light on the
relationship between Sally Hemings and her master,
Thomas Jefferson.”
Annette Gordon-Reed The history Pulitzer is awarded
for a “distinguished and appropriately documented
book on the history of the United States.” It carries a
$10,000 award.

University President Richard L. McCormick. "The
Hemingses of Monticello is a groundbreaking work
