Joanna McClinton is first woman, first African American to chair House Democratic Caucus

tate Rep. Joanna McClinton has been elected the first woman and first African American to lead the state House Democratic Caucus.

“This is exciting and tremendous because we’re able to show the entire state that leadership doesn’t look like what it has traditionally looked like in the past,” McClinton said in a short video she posted on Twitter. “Leadership can look like any one of us when we step up and we’re able to persuade others to believe in us.”

The chairwoman of the caucus is responsible for leading caucus meetings each day of a voting session and helping Democrats in the House understand the legislation called up for votes.
